An Accessible Mapping System for Visually Impaired Users
نویسنده
چکیده
This project was carried out to design and implement an accessible system to enable visually impaired people to understand the floor plan of a building. The basis of the project stems from the requirements of Uddingston Grammar school, who cater for visually impaired pupils. The school was moving to a new building and requested a system which could help in training its visually impaired pupils on how to navigate the new building. The system was designed and developed in conjunction with the visual impairment support department at the school. A fully working system was in place by the end of the project and was evaluated firstly using blindfolded, sighted users and then with one visually impaired user. The results of the evaluation were positive and point to the system being easy to use and useful for gaining an understanding of the layout of the building.

Towards Barrier-free Reading in the Digital Age: Electronic Texts for the Visually Impaired
Despite human-centered approaches to the development of electronic text, the visually impaired remain particularly susceptible to oversight. The digital realm has a strong bias toward visually-oriented representation, and is generally unaware of accessibility issues. To overcome this potential digital divide, efforts are underway in the development of both assistive reading technologies and acc...

In the first article Anke Brock and Christophe Jouffrais give an overview of their research on making geographic maps accessible to visually impaired users. They developed an accessible interactive map prototype composed of a raised-line overlay, an interactive tabletop, and speech output. Their work is currently being used in some classrooms in France for teaching geography to visually impaire...
متن کاملFrom Open Geographical Data to Tangible Maps: Improving the Accessibility of Maps for Visually Impaired People
Visual maps must be transcribed into (interactive) raised-line maps to be accessible for visually impaired people. However, these tactile maps suffer from several shortcomings: they are long and expensive to produce, they cannot display a large amount of information, and they are not dynamically modifiable. A number of methods have been developed to automate the production of raised-line maps, ...
